Specializing in math tutoring, I work to bring students to the “aha” moments, where concepts make sense and are not rote manipulations of symbols.
Depending on your needs, I can help with understanding homework and school materials, or work on skills that they sometimes do not have time for in school but that serve well for reinforcing number sense and going on to higher learning. For example, I teach ways to check math answers.
I can also supplement school texts with other materials such as Singapore Math books or Singapore challenging word problems, for extra practice or enrichment. For middle-schoolers who want enrichment, I work with The Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) material. Especially with younger students, I try to use manipulatives and games as well as textbooks and workbooks. From Algebra onward, I work primarily with the school’s materials and supplement as needed.
In middle school, students learn study skills they’ll need in high school and beyond. I can help students with organizational challenges by providing more support or guidance than available at school. For example, in math, they may need more specific guidance about how to practice for a math test. For other subjects and executive function skills, we can discuss tools to help your student feel confident and organized.
